Derrick Johnson Reflects on Teasing Travis Kelce Over His Reality Show
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce once ventured into the world of reality television, dating 50 women from across the United States in a quest for love. The show, titled Catching Kelce, aired for just one season in 2016, much to the relief of fans who now follow his relationship with pop icon Taylor Swift.
Reflecting on that time nearly a decade later, former teammate Derrick Johnson recounted the playful ribbing Kelce endured from his fellow players. “He tried not to [discuss the show in the locker room], but we kind of teased him at times,” Johnson shared in an interview. “When you’re playing for Andy Reid, there’s no distractions. You got to do your job and do it at a high level.” The locker room atmosphere was serious when it came to football, yet lighthearted jabs about Kelce’s reality TV stint were common.
Despite the show's lack of success, Johnson noted that Kelce had no trouble in the dating department long before his high-profile romance with Swift began in 2023. “He had that taken care of. Good or bad, that’s the area that he needs no help in,” Johnson remarked, hinting at Kelce's charm off the field.

As the Chiefs' all-time tackle leader, Johnson couldn’t resist adding a final quip about his former teammate's current relationship. “He outkicked his coverage. Taylor’s big time,” he said. “Kelce’s big time as well, football-wise, but she is globally. So they’re definitely a power couple.”
Kelce himself has not looked back fondly on his reality TV experience. In a July podcast appearance, he labeled Catching Kelce as “the worst thing I ever did.” He expressed regret over not understanding the reality TV landscape at the time. “I don’t even think anybody watched it,” he added, reflecting on its lack of impact.
In a humorous moment during his 2023 Saturday Night Live hosting gig, he joked about the show: “[It was] kind of like The Bachelor, except instead of roses I handed out footballs. And instead of watching, people did not.” His self-deprecating humor highlighted the embarrassment he felt over that chapter of his life.

While Catching Kelce may not have panned out as he hoped, Kelce's personal life has flourished. In a recent GQ interview, he expressed admiration for his relationship with Swift. “I hadn’t experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions,” he said, indicating a deep connection with Swift that transcends their public personas.
