Detroit Red Wings Trade for Goalie John Gibson from Anaheim Ducks

Jun 28 2025

On Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings finalized a trade to acquire goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, a move that could trigger a series of transactions across the NHL as teams seek goaltending solutions.

In exchange for Gibson, Detroit dispatched backup goalie Petr Mrazek along with a second-round pick in 2027 and a fourth-round pick in 2026. Notably, Anaheim did not retain any salary in this deal.

With the offseason underway, teams like the back-to-back Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers and the rebuilding Philadelphia Flyers are anticipated to be in the market for goaltenders.

Gibson, now 31, has dedicated his first 12 seasons in the NHL to Anaheim. He is under contract for two additional years with a salary cap hit of $6.4 million.

General manager Pat Verbeek expressed gratitude towards Gibson, stating, "We want to thank John for his time with our organization and being an integral part of the Ducks for more than a decade. It became clear John wanted a new opportunity, and after many discussions with him, we felt now was the right time to make this move."

Meanwhile, other trades were also completed on Saturday amid the ongoing draft activities.

The Los Angeles Kings traded 24-year-old defenseman Jordan Spence to Ottawa in exchange for the 67th overall pick and Colorado's sixth-round pick in 2026. Additionally, the Buffalo Sabres sent Connor Clifton along with a second-round pick to Pittsburgh for Conor Timmins and Isaac Beliveau.

In another move, the Washington Capitals signed 23-year-old forward Justin Sourdif to a two-year contract worth $1.65 million after acquiring him from Florida for a second-round pick. Sourdif, who scored during his brief NHL stint last season, contributed 10 points in 18 games during the Charlotte Checkers' playoff run.

The Capitals are optimistic that Sourdif can fill a gap on their second or third line, especially given the competitive landscape following Florida's signing of playoff MVP Sam Bennett to an eight-year, $64 million deal.

In Canada, the Calgary Flames extended defenseman Kevin Bahl, standing at 6-foot-6, with a six-year contract valued at just over $32 million. The Winnipeg Jets also bolstered their defensive lineup by signing Haydn Fleury for $1.9 million over two years. Bahl's contract will impact the salary cap at $5.35 million through the 2030-31 season.
