Devers Homers Against Former Team as Giants Edge Red Sox 3-2
Rafael Devers made an immediate impact for the San Francisco Giants, hitting his first home run for the team against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. This victory, a close 3-2 win, came just six days after Devers was traded from Boston.
Acquired in a significant deal last Sunday, Devers had struggled initially, going hitless in his first six at-bats of the series. However, he broke through in the third inning, launching a two-run homer off Brayan Bello (3-2) that sailed over the left-field fence. The ball was caught by a fan wearing a Red Sox T-shirt, adding an ironic twist to the moment. Cheers erupted from the crowd as Devers rounded the bases, marking his 216th career home run and extending the Giants' lead to 3-0.
Less than two years into a lucrative 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension signed in 2023, Devers found himself traded by Boston. His performance on Saturday was a bright spot for the Giants, who have struggled recently, winning only two of their last seven games.
In addition to Devers' heroics, Heliot Ramos also contributed with a home run. Landen Roupp (5-5) rebounded from a previous rough outing against the Dodgers, delivering six scoreless innings while striking out seven batters to secure the win.
Despite a shaky ninth inning where Camilo Doval allowed two runs, he managed to earn his 12th save in 15 opportunities. The Red Sox had been on a roll, winning seven of their last eight games, and they threatened in the ninth with the tying run on second base and one out. However, Doval closed out the game by getting Marcelo Mayer and pinch-hitter Romy Gonzalez to ground out.
Notably, Devers became the tenth player in MLB history to hit home runs for and against the same team within a week, according to Sportradar. The last player to achieve this feat was Abraham Toro in July 2021.
Looking ahead, Boston will send RHP Luis Giolito (3-1, 3.74 ERA) to the mound against LHP Robbie Ray (8-2, 2.68 ERA) in their next matchup.
