Diamondbacks Snap Losing Streak with 7-2 Victory Over Athletics

Aug 03 2025

In a decisive performance, the Arizona Diamondbacks triumphed over the Oakland Athletics 7-2 on Saturday night, effectively halting a frustrating six-game losing streak. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. delivered a pivotal two-run single in the fifth inning, while Ketel Marte, Alek Thomas, and Corbin Carroll contributed with home runs.

Zac Gallen took the mound for Arizona, allowing two runs on nine hits over six innings, improving his record to 8-12. The bullpen, featuring Andrew Saalfrank, Kendall Graveman, and Kevin Ginkel, each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the win.

Marte ignited the scoring with his 21st home run of the season—a solo shot off J.T. Ginn in the first inning—giving the Diamondbacks an early advantage.

However, the Athletics responded in the third. Nick Kurtz led off with a single against Gallen, followed by back-to-back doubles from Shea Langeliers and Tyler Soderstrom, which shifted the lead to 2-1 in favor of Oakland.

In the fifth inning, Thomas and Blaze Alexander opened with singles, placing runners on the corners. Carroll's walk loaded the bases for Marte, who tied the game at 2-2 with a groundout. Geraldo Perdomo then walked to reload the bases, setting the stage for Gurriel's two-run single that propelled Arizona ahead 4-2.

Thomas extended the lead with a solo homer off Justin Sterner in the sixth inning. Adrian Del Castillo added a sacrifice fly in the seventh, pushing the score to 6-2. Carroll capped off the scoring in the ninth with his 22nd home run of the season.

Ginn struggled on the mound for Oakland, surrendering four runs on four hits and five walks across four innings. This loss marked the end of the Athletics' three-game winning streak.

With this victory, Arizona improved to just two wins in their last eleven games. Notably, Gurriel's go-ahead single came after he had recorded seven grand slams and maintained a .394 career average with the bases loaded.

Gallen's performance was a welcome turnaround after he had allowed 16 runs in his previous 17 innings over three starts. The Athletics have yet to announce their starting pitcher for Sunday’s rubber match against Diamondbacks left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who holds a record of 3-7 with a 5.63 ERA.
