Eagles OTAs Insights: Key Players Absent, New Roles Emerging

The Philadelphia Eagles commenced their organized team activities (OTAs) this week, setting the stage for a challenging 2025 season as they defend their Super Bowl title. The first practice open to the media took place Wednesday, following Tuesday's initial session.

While the players donned shells and shorts, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. Observers noted the roster's evolution, with numerous spots available on a talented team. The 82-minute practice yielded several noteworthy observations.

One significant absence raised eyebrows: Bryce Huff was missing from Wednesday's voluntary OTA session. This marks the second of six practices in this phase. Huff, in the second year of a three-year, $51 million contract, struggled last season with only 20 pressures and 2.5 sacks across 12 games, even being a healthy scratch during Super Bowl LIX.

Though it remains unclear if Huff missed other offseason workouts, his absence is worth monitoring. The Eagles face challenges regarding his future; trading or cutting him before June 1 isn't feasible, but options may open up post-June 1. The depth chart currently sees Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, and Azeez Ojulari ahead of Huff, with Josh Uche potentially in front as well.

Meanwhile, Cooper DeJean and Kelee Ringo are stepping into prominent roles at cornerback after impressive rookie seasons. With Darius Slay no longer mentoring them, both players are positioned as starters. DeJean played outside cornerback in base defense but shifted to the slot during nickel and dime formations. Mitchell, primarily a right cornerback, took reps at left cornerback, which adds an intriguing dynamic to the defense.

Reed Blankenship's absence during this voluntary practice raises questions about safety depth. With C.J. Gardner-Johnson traded this offseason, Sydney Brown and rookie Andrew Mukuba took first-team reps in 7-on-7 drills, while Lewis Cine and Andre Sam also saw action. The Eagles must address who will start alongside Blankenship as they head into summer.

Offensively, the Eagles are keeping their playbook close to the vest during OTAs. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith were absent from team drills, limiting insights into the offensive strategy under Patullo. Jalen Hurts focused on short passes, with slant routes to Jahan Dotson featuring prominently. Tight end Dallas Goedert was frequently targeted, indicating a potential emphasis on tight end involvement this season.

Backup quarterbacks often shine during OTAs, and McKee seized his opportunity on Wednesday. He connected on a deep touchdown pass to Danny Gray after the receiver outpaced Ringo on a go route. Undrafted free agent Darius Cooper also caught several passes from McKee, solidifying his role as a reliable target. McKee is establishing himself as the clear No. 2 quarterback, poised to step in if needed.
