Federal Investigation Targets Pistons' Malik Beasley Over Gambling Allegations
Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley finds himself at the center of a federal gambling investigation initiated by the U.S. District Attorney's office. Reports indicate that the inquiry involves allegations of Beasley placing bets on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023-24 season while he was with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Pistons have acknowledged the investigation but have chosen to withhold further comments. "We are aware there is an investigation and have no other information," stated Kevin Grigg, the Pistons' Chief Communications Officer. He added that any additional comments would be deferred to the NBA.
In response, NBA spokesman Mike Bass confirmed the league's cooperation with federal prosecutors, emphasizing their commitment to transparency during the investigation.
Shams Charania from ESPN was the first to break the news regarding Beasley's situation. His report highlighted the seriousness of the allegations, which could have significant implications for the player's career.
Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, addressed the situation, clarifying that "there have been no charges against Malik." He urged the public to reserve judgment until more information is available, noting that federal investigations are not uncommon in such contexts.
After a season with the Bucks, Beasley signed with the Pistons in July 2024. The 28-year-old guard is poised to enter free agency on June 30 unless a new contract is negotiated with Detroit.
During the 2024-25 season, Beasley showcased his skills by averaging 16.3 points per game and hitting 319 three-pointers, placing him second in the league behind Anthony Edwards. This achievement made him one of only three players in NBA history to surpass 300 three-pointers while maintaining a shooting percentage of 40% or better from beyond the arc.
A Georgia native and Florida State alumnus, Beasley was selected as the No. 19 overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 2016 NBA draft. His career has included stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, and Utah Jazz.
The unfolding investigation raises questions about Beasley's future in the league and whether it will impact his performance or contract negotiations moving forward.
