Giants Commit to Manager Bob Melvin Through 2026

Jul 01 2025

The San Francisco Giants have made a definitive move regarding their managerial future, opting to retain Bob Melvin through the 2026 season. This decision reflects the front office's confidence in Melvin's leadership capabilities.

Buster Posey, the president of baseball operations, praised Melvin as an "experienced leader" and highlighted his status as one of the "most well-respected managers" in the sport. "His leadership, preparation, and connection with our players have been invaluable," Posey stated, emphasizing the belief that Melvin is the right person to steer the team forward.

Currently in his second season with the Giants, Melvin boasts an extensive managerial career spanning 22 years, including tenures with the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres. His experience also includes managing the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group," Melvin expressed. "I believe in what we're building here." His commitment to the team's vision is evident as he looks ahead.

As of Tuesday, the Giants hold a record of 45-40, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by eight games in the National League West and sitting 1.5 games out of the final National League Wild Card spot. Despite a promising start of 19-12 in April, the team has faced challenges recently, losing 11 of their last 15 games. This downturn comes on the heels of a significant trade that brought slugger Rafael Devers from the Red Sox.

In his inaugural season with the Giants, Melvin led the team to an 80-82 record. His accolades include being named manager of the year three times: first in 2007 with the Diamondbacks and again in 2012 and 2018 with the Athletics. With 1,642 regular-season wins, he ranks third among active managers, trailing only Terry Francona and Bruce Bochy, who famously guided the Giants to three World Series championships.

Melvin's experience and track record position him as a pivotal figure in the Giants' quest for success as they navigate the remainder of the season and beyond.
