Giants Secure 2-0 Victory Over Marlins

May 31 2025

Matt Chapman launched a home run, while Kyle Harrison delivered five innings of shutout pitching, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 2-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday night.

Tyler Fitzgerald contributed significantly, going 2 for 3 with a double and a stolen base, helping the Giants break a three-game losing streak.

Harrison, now 1-1, made his second start since joining the rotation, filling in for three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, who remains sidelined due to a strained right pectoral muscle.

Harrison's performance was impressive; he held the Marlins (22-33) hitless until Eric Wagaman's leadoff single in the fourth inning. The left-handed pitcher struck out five batters and issued three walks, maintaining control throughout.

Following Harrison, five relievers combined to limit the Marlins to just two hits. Camilo Doval entered in the ninth to secure his sixth save by retiring the final four batters.

Chapman's solo home run off Marlins starter Cal Quantrill (3-5) soared 420 feet to left field, extending the Giants' lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. This blast tied Chapman with Heliot Ramos and Wilmer Flores for the team lead in home runs at ten.

Quantrill had a strong outing, striking out a season-high seven batters over five innings, but he allowed eight hits and two runs while walking one.

The Giants took an early lead in the first inning when Flores drove in Ramos, who had tripled earlier in the frame, with a two-out single after an exhausting 11-pitch at-bat.

Miami's offense was limited to just two additional hits: Connor Norby's double in the seventh and a single from pinch-hitter Jesús Sánchez in the eighth.

Despite having nine base runners, the Marlins struggled significantly, finishing 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

In the eighth inning, trailing 0-2, Sánchez led off with a single against Spencer Bivens and advanced when Otto Lopez was hit by a pitch. Doval entered with two outs and managed to retire Norby on a flyout, extinguishing the threat.

The Giants have now gone 12 consecutive games without exceeding four runs scored.

Looking ahead, Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (7-0, 2.56 ERA) is set to start the middle game of the series against Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (1-1, 4.73).
