Giants Surge Past Phillies with Late Inning Rally

Jul 08 2025

In a pivotal moment of the game, Casey Schmitt's groundball brought home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, followed closely by Matt Chapman’s headfirst dive into home plate, securing another run for the San Francisco Giants as they triumphed over the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on Monday night.

The eighth inning began with a hit-by-pitch as Orion Kerkering (5-4) sent Willy Adames to first base. A subsequent single from Chapman advanced Adames to third, and Wilmer Flores was also hit, loading the bases for Schmitt.

Tyler Rogers (4-2) faced a challenge in the top of the eighth, allowing a leadoff single to Kyle Schwarber but skillfully maneuvered out of the situation to earn the win. Camilo Doval secured his 14th save, striking out J.T. Realmuto after a grueling 13-pitch duel before wrapping up the game with a 3-6 double play.

Earlier in the game, San Francisco had loaded the bases in the second inning against lefty Cristopher Sánchez, who struck out Jung Hoo Lee but allowed an RBI groundout from Luis Matos. This marked Sánchez's first walk in five starts, ending a career-best streak without issuing a free pass.

The Phillies managed to tie the game at 1 in the fifth inning due to a wild pitch from Giants starter Landen Roupp.

Schmitt made his return for the Giants after missing ten games due to a hand injury sustained on June 25.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia's offense struggled to find its rhythm. After winning three of four and five of seven games with a total of 29 runs scored, they fell silent.

With the go-ahead run on first and one out in the fifth, Giants right fielder Matos executed a remarkable diving catch on Schwarber's sharp line drive, halting the Phillies' momentum.

Bryce Harper was subsequently called out on strikes, ending the threat for Philadelphia.

Adames extended his hitting streak to a season-best eight games with a two-out double in the fifth inning for San Francisco.

Looking ahead, Phillies RHP Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.64 ERA) is set to face Giants LHP Robbie Ray (9-3, 2.68) on Tuesday.
