Giants Triumph Over Athletics 6-2 as Adames Shines

Jul 07 2025

Willy Adames showcased his prowess at the plate, homering and drawing two bases-loaded walks, propelling the San Francisco Giants to a 6-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday night.

Tyler Fitzgerald contributed with a solo home run, while Rafael Devers and Wilmer Flores each recorded two hits, supporting an inconsistent yet effective performance from Giants starter Hayden Birdsong.

Adames, fresh off a game where he set a season high with four RBIs, continued his hot streak, helping the Giants secure two wins in their three-game series against their Bay Area rivals.

In the first inning, Adames walked to bring in a run. He then launched a solo shot off A's starter Jacob Lopez in the fourth and walked again with the bases loaded in the fifth.

This marks the first instance since Rich Aurilia in 2000 that a Giants shortstop has achieved three RBIs in consecutive games.

For the Athletics, Tyler Soderstrom had a notable performance with two hits, including his 15th home run of the season.

Birdsong (4-3) navigated through traffic for most of the night, allowing his first run only after Soderstrom's homer in the fourth. He struck out six batters and managed to win for the first time since June 1 despite facing control issues.

Relievers Spencer Bivens and All-Star Randy RodrΓguez each retired three batters without incident. Camilo Doval allowed a run in the ninth but secured the win by getting Jacob Wilson to ground out, completing a five-hitter.

Lopez (2-5) struggled, giving up four runs and five hits over 4 1/3 innings.

A pivotal moment occurred when Lopez issued a bases-loaded walk on a checked swing but then retired the next eight batters, including seven consecutive strikeouts.

Despite walking five batters, Birdsong managed to keep them from scoring, a key statistic in his performance.

Looking ahead, Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (6-5, 3.48 ERA) is set to face Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (7-2, 2.68) on Monday. Meanwhile, Athletics left-hander Jeffrey Springs (6-6, 4.07) will pitch against Braves right-hander Didier Fuentes (0-2, 9.00) on Tuesday.
