Isaiah Rodgers Prepares for New Chapter with Vikings
Minnesota Vikings cornerback Isaiah Rodgers is gearing up for a pivotal season after missing 2023 due to a gambling suspension. Previously, he celebrated a Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles, but now he’s focused on making his mark in Minnesota.
"Just enjoy the process while it's here," Rodgers stated during mini-camp this week. "I want to do whatever I can to help the team win and bring a Lombardi to Minnesota."
While his signing may not have garnered widespread attention, expectations are high for Rodgers as he aims to secure a starting position in the upcoming season. Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has expressed confidence in his potential impact.
"He just wants me to be me," Rodgers explained, referring to Flores. "That’s one of the reasons I came here. He encourages me to utilize my ball skills and knowledge to make plays."
At 27, Rodgers will team up with pro-bowler Byron Murphy, and their chemistry is already evident. In just a few weeks, they have developed a strong friendship.
"We play the game a lot," said Rodgers. "We discuss film, sharing insights on how we see things. We switch from boundary to field, having fun with the scheme and learning from each other."
This camaraderie could translate into increased turnovers for the Vikings. Murphy recorded six interceptions last season, ranking third in the NFL.
"A lot of plays on the ball. A lot of interceptions. He dropped a lot, though," joked Rodgers. "He should have at least 10-plus. I’m aiming to get in that stat category and compete with him."
"I dropped like five or six," Murphy admitted with a smile. "I don’t know the exact number, but I need to make up for it this year for sure."
Rodgers is also expected to contribute in the return game, having previously scored a touchdown on a kickoff return in 2020. During OTAs and minicamp, he took reps in that role alongside several teammates.
When asked if he envisions that being part of his responsibilities this season, Rodgers replied, "Anything to help the team. Just having fun out here and enjoying the process too."
