Vikings' Defense: New Faces and Familiar Talents
The Minnesota Vikings bolstered their defense this offseason, yet defensive coordinator Brian Flores remains equally enthusiastic about the players already on the roster. During a press conference at minicamp, Flores addressed the media, highlighting the significance of both new acquisitions and returning talent.
When asked about the recent signings of defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, Flores acknowledged their impact but quickly shifted focus to the development of existing players. "Those are two great additions, excited to have both guys," he stated. "But also excited about guys like Jalen Redmond who came on, really, the entire year. He just got better and better day after day and week after week. Levi [Drake Rodriguez] who has, I would say, grown significantly from year one to year two. Bigger, stronger, faster, more confident."
Flores emphasized the depth within the defensive unit, noting, "We got a lot of guys who have played, there's a good amount of depth in that room. We're excited about all the pieces, and as coaches, it's about who fits where and how do we get the most out of each individual player and the collective unit."
Among the returning players, pass rusher Dallas Turner stands out. A first-round pick last year, Turner had limited opportunities behind established players Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel. "All positive with him. Definitely see some growth, or a lot of growth, from his standpoint and excited to see where this goes," Flores remarked. He added that being surrounded by experienced players has been beneficial for Turner’s development.
Shifting focus to the secondary, Flores highlighted new additions and returning players stepping into larger roles. Isaiah Rodgers is one such addition who has garnered praise from both Flores and head coach Kevin O'Connell. "I've always thought he was a good player and was ascending," Flores noted. "And when the opportunity presented itself that we could maybe acquire him, I was all in. And I'm happy we got him; he's been a great addition. He's got great football IQ and acumen."
Rodgers is expected to play a significant role this season due to the Vikings' thin cornerback depth chart. Behind star Byron Murphy Jr., there are several players with uncertain potential, including Mekhi Blackmon, who missed his sophomore season due to a torn ACL. "As a rookie, you saw the quickness, the speed, the acumen. I think he needs to build right on that," Flores said regarding Blackmon's recovery.
Flores also acknowledged Theo Jackson, a safety who has been lower on the depth chart but is set to see increased responsibilities following Cam Bynum's departure in free agency. "Theo's been great, and that's something we've been saying for two years," Flores commented. "I think he's steadily built his communication skills, his techniques, his fundamentals, his disguises, his playmaking ability. He's one of the hardest workers we have."
Last season, the Vikings' defense ranked fifth in points allowed and tied for first in turnovers. While replicating those statistics may prove challenging this year, Flores is confident in his ability to assemble a formidable defensive unit once again.
