Vikings Secure Tight End Josh Oliver with Contract Extension
The Minnesota Vikings confirmed a contract extension for tight end Josh Oliver on Tuesday, solidifying his role as a key player in their offensive strategy. Known for his impressive size and strength, Oliver excels as a blocker, contributing significantly to both the running and passing game.
The extension spans three years, although the team has not revealed the financial specifics of the deal. Last season, Oliver achieved career highs with 258 receiving yards and three touchdowns, yet his primary responsibility remains blocking, allowing No. 1 tight end T.J. Hockenson to take the lead in aerial plays.
Despite being primarily a blocker, Oliver's physicality makes him a formidable red zone option, capable of delivering impactful gains throughout the season. The Vikings initially brought him on board as a free agent in 2023, and he stepped up significantly when Hockenson was sidelined due to injury, participating in 56% of offensive snaps—a personal best.
In addition to Oliver and Hockenson, the Vikings' tight end roster includes sixth-round rookie Gavin Bartholomew, along with undrafted rookies Bryson Nesbit and Ben Yurosek. On Tuesday, they also added free agent Giovanni Ricci to the mix.
As the Vikings look ahead, Oliver and his fellow tight ends will be catching passes from second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who is seen as a pivotal figure in the team's aspirations for a franchise quarterback.
