J.J. Spaun stood on the green at Oakmont Country Club, the weight of his victory settling in as he thought of his late friend, Andy Wood. The 34-year-old golfer clinched his first major championship at the 2025 U.S. Open on June 15, just three months after Wood's untimely passing.
“RIP Andy,” Spaun posted on Instagram two days later, expressing gratitude for the support he felt from above. “I know you were up there on Sunday helping me buddy! ❤️.”
In the wake of his triumph, Spaun shared plans to honor Wood during his celebration. “I’m gonna have a beer for him tonight,” he remarked, a nod to their shared memories.
Wood, who had been Spaun’s college roommate at San Diego State University, died from a heart defect on March 17, coinciding with the final round of The Players Championship. That day, Spaun faced off against Rory McIlroy, pushing the seasoned golfer to a playoff before ultimately falling short.
Reflecting on that emotional week, Spaun expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he received. “Unforgettable week at @theplayers and so appreciative of all the kind messages and support throughout the week!” he shared on social media.
In an exclusive interview following his U.S. Open victory, Spaun described the whirlwind of emotions that accompanied his win. “You go from this huge, euphoric moment to now you gotta count your scorecard,” he explained. “You’re whisked off to the putting green and now you have to make this huge speech on national television.”

His wife, Melody Spaun, and their two daughters, Emerson and Violet, were by his side during this monumental occasion. “It’s wild,” he added, acknowledging the surreal nature of the experience. “Especially for me, I’m not always in these situations. Let alone a major championship.”
J.J. and Melody’s journey began in 2013, culminating in their marriage in July 2019. He humorously recalled how she initially knew little about golf. “She didn’t know what she was getting into,” he laughed, recognizing the challenges of their life together.
“My hat’s off to her for being such a huge support,” he continued, acknowledging her role in managing their family while he pursues his career. “At times I’m gone for a month, you know? Basically single parenting.”
