J.J. Spaun's Early Morning CVS Run Precedes U.S. Open Victory

At 3:00 AM on the day of his U.S. Open triumph, J.J. Spaun found himself navigating the aisles of a CVS in downtown, a situation he never anticipated. The urgency stemmed from his daughter’s stomach bug, which had kept the family awake through the night.

“I ended up running to CVS because my daughter was vomiting all night long,” Spaun recounted to reporters on June 15, shortly after clinching his first major title. The 34-year-old golfer, who shares two daughters with his wife Melody—Emerson, born in 2020, and Violet, born in 2023—faced a challenging morning before stepping onto the course.

Reflecting on that chaotic start, he said, “My wife was up at 3 AM, and Violet is vomiting all over. She can’t keep anything down. It was kind of a rough start to the morning.” Despite the early turmoil, Spaun managed to focus on the competition ahead.

His performance began slowly; he recorded bogeys on the first three holes and reached five bogeys by the sixth hole, as noted by various sports outlets. Yet, as the day progressed, Spaun found his rhythm and ultimately posted a 2-over 72 in the final round.

After securing victory, he expressed his disbelief: “Just to finish it off like that is just a dream. You watch other people do it. You see the Tiger [Woods] clip, you see Nick Taylor’s putt, you see crazy moments. To have my own moment like that at this championship, I’ll never forget this moment for the rest of my life.”

In a heartwarming social media post shared by the official PGA Tour X account, Spaun was seen signing his winning scorecard with both daughters perched on his lap. The accompanying caption read, “Signing the winning U.S. Open scorecard on Father’s Day with your two daughters; it does not get better than this.”

Spaun’s victory marked a significant milestone; he became the first golfer since Hale Irwin in 1979 to win the U.S. Open with six or more bogeys in the final round. Reflecting on his performance, he stated, “It just felt, like, as bad as things were going, I just still tried to commit to every shot. I tried to just continue to dig deep.” His perseverance paid off as he navigated a challenging back nine.

Earlier this year, Spaun shared a joyful moment on Instagram from April’s Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. A photo captured him smiling alongside one of his daughters, showcasing their shared love for golf. “Another Masters tournament under my belt. This place is so special and every opportunity to play in it is [an] invaluable experience for the next one,” he wrote in the post.
