Judge Overturns Suspension of New Jersey Little Leaguer, Allowing Participation in State Tournament
A 12-year-old Little Leaguer from Haddonfield, New Jersey, is set to play in the state tournament after a judge ruled that his suspension for a bat flip was unreasonable. The decision came just in time for Marco Rocco, who will take the field Thursday night.
Joe Rocco, Marco's father, expressed relief following the ruling. The judge's decision allows Marco to participate in the double-elimination tournament, where teams vie for a chance to advance to the regionals and potentially the Little League World Series.
Little League Baseball has stated it will respect the Gloucester County Superior Court's ruling. However, they expressed disappointment over the situation, emphasizing that it diverted focus from the positive experiences intended for players and families involved in the International Tournament.
The controversy began on July 16 when Marco celebrated a game-winning home run by flipping his bat into the air during the sectional tournament final. Umpires deemed the act unsportsmanlike, leading to his ejection and subsequent suspension.
“On the car ride home, he said to me, ‘Dad, I have no idea what rule I broke,’” Joe Rocco recounted. He noted that had Marco known bat flipping was against the rules, he would have refrained from doing it. Joe Rocco serves as an assistant coach for his son's team.
In response to the suspension, Joe Rocco sought legal counsel and filed for an emergency temporary restraining order, arguing that his son deserved to play in the upcoming tournament round. The judge agreed with their position.
Joe Rocco criticized the suspension as hypocritical, pointing out that Marco had celebrated similarly in previous games without any repercussions. He also highlighted that Little League Baseball has shared videos of bat flips on social media without imposing penalties.
“I watched the Little League World Series with him all the time,” Joe Rocco said. “We see bat flipping; they promote it. So Marco had no idea it was a violation of any potential rule.”
Little League responded by stating that tournament rules guide conduct determinations and that such decisions are at the umpire's discretion.
The suspension has sparked significant public reaction. Jason Fiorentino, who recorded Marco's game-winning homer and bat flip, remarked, “It’s a 12-year-old kid fulfilling a dream in a huge moment. You’re going to take away that moment from him?”
This incident has raised questions about consistency in officiating and the interpretation of sportsmanship within youth leagues. As Marco prepares for his next game, the focus shifts back to the field where young athletes strive to achieve their dreams.
