Julio Rodriguez Makes History with 20+ Home Runs and Steals in Four Consecutive Seasons
Julio Rodriguez etched his name in Major League Baseball history on Sunday, hitting a two-run homer that marked his 100th career home run. This achievement made him the first player ever to record 20 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases in each of his first four seasons. The Seattle Mariners triumphed over the Texas Rangers with a final score of 5-4.
Rodriguez's power was evident in the third inning, but he also showcased his speed by stealing his 21st base of the season after a single in the fifth. Jorge Polanco contributed to the scoreboard with a solo home run in the second inning, while shortstop J.P. Crawford added a two-run blast in the fourth against Rangers starter Jacob deGrom, who, despite the loss, became the fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 1,800 career strikeouts.
The Rangers managed to keep the game competitive, scoring three runs against Mariners starter Logan Evans. However, they could only muster one additional run against the Mariners' bullpen, which was anchored by closer Andrés Muñoz, who secured his 25th save of the season.
In a pivotal moment during the ninth inning, Sam Haggerty pinch-ran for Joc Pederson and attempted to steal second base while Wyatt Langford was at bat. Initially ruled safe, Haggerty's call was overturned after a replay review, leading to Langford striking out and ending the inning.
This game marked a notable milestone for deGrom, as it was the first time he had allowed three or more home runs in a game since September 30, 2022, when he was with the New York Mets facing the Atlanta Braves.
Looking ahead, Rangers left-hander Patrick Corbin is set to start against the New York Yankees on Monday evening. The Mariners will take a day off before right-hander Bryan Woo takes the mound against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.
