Knicks Part Ways with Head Coach Tom Thibodeau Following Eastern Conference Finals Run

Jun 03 2025

The New York Knicks have made a significant change in their coaching staff, parting ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday. This decision comes on the heels of the team's impressive journey to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, marking their first appearance in that stage in 25 years.

Team president Leon Rose, with the backing of owner Jim Dolan, initiated the move, as reported by various sources. The news of Thibodeau's dismissal was initially disclosed by ESPN.

In a statement, Rose emphasized the organization's commitment to winning a championship, stating, "This pursuit led us to the difficult decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we've decided to move in another direction. We can't thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach." He acknowledged Thibodeau's contributions over the past five seasons, which included four playoff appearances and victories, but ultimately concluded that a change was necessary for the team's future.

This decision raises eyebrows, particularly given Thibodeau's success in revitalizing a franchise that struggled throughout much of the 2000s. Since his hiring in 2020, he guided the Knicks back to playoff contention, earning his second NBA Coach of the Year award in his inaugural season.

The pinnacle of Thibodeau's tenure came during the 2024-25 season when the Knicks triumphed over the defending champion Boston Celtics in the second round, propelling them to the conference finals for the first time since 2000β€”when Thibodeau served as an assistant coach under Jeff Van Gundy.

Following their elimination on Saturday, team captain Jalen Brunson voiced his support for Thibodeau, pushing back against inquiries regarding the coach's fit for the team. Just three days later, however, Thibodeau was let go, concluding his time in New York with a record of 226 wins and 174 losses, placing him fourth among Knicks coaches in terms of victories.

Despite facing criticism for his demanding coaching style and reliance on starters, which some argued led to player fatigue, Thibodeau's methods appeared effective during his time with the Knicks. The team had not won a playoff series since 2013 but has now achieved that feat in three consecutive seasons. They finished with a record of 50-32 in 2023-24 and improved to 51-31 this past season.

The Knicks last claimed an NBA championship in 1973, and as they look ahead, they will seek a new leader to guide them back to glory.
