Aug 30 2025

Lee Corso, the iconic sportscaster, made his final appearance on ESPN's College GameDay, marking the end of an era in college football broadcasting.

On August 30, at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Corso, 89, donned a tuxedo for his last show. His fellow panelists paid homage by wearing suits topped with oversized bobbleheads of Corso, creating a heartfelt tribute.

Corso's journey on College GameDay spanned 38 years, with the Ohio State Buckeyes being both his inaugural and farewell headgear picks.

“This is one of the easiest picks I’ve ever made,” he declared during the broadcast. “Texas is No. 1 [and] they have a Manning at quarterback. Poor Ohio State, [but] they got a chance. Give me my first love!”

As he donned the Buckeyes’ mascot head, the crowd erupted in applause, giving him a standing ovation. The school’s marching band joined in, forming the word “Corso” on the field.

Viewers took to social media to express their admiration for Corso. One user remarked, “I don’t care who you’re a fan of. This was an incredible tribute to Lee Corso. Thanks for the memories.”

Another added, “Lee Corso is a college football legend. Thank you for everything Coach.”

Kirk Herbstreit, Corso’s colleague at ESPN, shared insights about his departure. “Sometimes you learn more from how people make you feel than what they say. He’s the epitome of that,” Herbstreit stated. “From the very first day I met him in my audition when I was terrified at 25 years old until right now, he makes everybody feel special. His eyes, his words. He cares.”

Herbstreit continued, “He could have a broken arm, or in his case he’s been dealing with a lot of health issues; he’s always positive. He’s always upbeat. He’s always a guy who is grateful for what he has. Watching him be that way has made me that way.”

Herbstreit also reflected on the life lessons learned from Corso, emphasizing the importance of positivity and gratitude in life.

Alongside Corso and Herbstreit, College GameDay features Rece Davis, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban. During the farewell show, McAfee shared a touching moment with Corso, embracing him warmly.
