Lifeguards Gather in Ventnor City for Red Bull Surf and Rescue Competition
Lifeguards from various East Coast locations arrived in Ventnor City, New Jersey, on Monday to participate in the Red Bull Surf and Rescue competition.
"We are celebrating the lifeguards who protect us throughout the summer," stated Bruckner Chase, the event's technical director. The competition not only highlights their skills but also honors their dedication to beach safety.
Before the competition commenced, attendees were treated to a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, accompanied by a dramatic flyover from the Coast Guard, setting a patriotic tone for the day.
"This area is where lifeguarding began, where we learned to protect our beaches and communities. It’s the perfect location for this event," Bruckner added, beaming with pride.
A total of twenty-eight co-ed teams participated in various challenges, including running, swimming, paddleboarding, and a rescue simulation. Additionally, professional surfers faced their own set of demanding tasks.
The team competition was won by Dan Lenahan and siblings Mitch and Molly Cullen from Sea Grit, New Jersey. In individual categories, Tom O'Neil from Riis Park, New York, took home the men's title, while Kelsey Cummings from California and Diamond Beach Patrols claimed victory in the women's division.
"As a surfer, I owe everything to these lifeguards who keep us safe," remarked Rob Kelly, a professional surfer based in Ocean City, New Jersey. His competitive spirit was evident as he prepared for his own challenges.
"I’m not backing down; I’m here to compete," Kelly declared confidently.
Jenna Parker from Harvey Cedar Beach Patrol also participated in the individual events. "I've attended Red Bull every year since its inception, and our team consistently performs well," she noted.
Parker, a retired U.S. triathlete, shared insights into her rigorous training regimen. "It’s early mornings followed by sneaky lunchtime workouts—don’t tell my boss—and then more training at the end of the day," she explained with a laugh.
The event not only showcased athletic prowess but also fostered camaraderie among lifeguards dedicated to ensuring beach safety. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as competitors pushed their limits while honoring their vital roles in coastal communities.
