Lynx Welcomes 11 Young Athletes for Special One-Day Contracts

Jun 19 2025

The Minnesota Lynx made headlines by signing 11 young athletes from Special Olympics Minnesota to one-day contracts, an initiative that brought joy and excitement to both players and fans alike. Head Coach Cheryl Reeve expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "This is my favorite day of the season."

After completing the necessary paperwork, the new recruits took to the court alongside their professional counterparts. Thirteen-year-old Havannah had the opportunity to play with standout point guard Courtney Williams. "It was really fun to meet her. She was really funny and she was really nice," Havannah shared, reflecting on the experience that ignited her passion for basketball.

Havannah's perspective shifted during this event. "I feel like it opened a new door because my grandpa is our coach for every sport and he keeps on asking me, 'Do you want to play basketball?' and I'm like, 'No, I don't feel like that's me,' but now that I played with them I think I actually might enjoy it," she explained.

The connections formed between the Dream Team members and their professional idols were heartfelt. Jasmine noted, "I watched her every time and she was the most incredible woman I've ever seen," showcasing the impact these athletes have on young fans.

For the Lynx players, this event provided a refreshing break from their rigorous training routines. Kayla McBride, a guard for the Lynx, remarked, "The best part about it is they're just here to be with us. We talk too much about the season and all the expectations, but when we're out there on the court with them it's just about basketball and having fun, and we get to learn about them too."

The Jr. Lynx Dream Team will receive recognition during a special on-court ceremony on Friday, Aug. 8, when the Lynx host the Washington Mystics, marking a memorable day for all involved.

Marielle Mohs, a local storyteller, is excited to share these inspiring moments in her home state of Minnesota, where she grew up in Eden Prairie and South Minneapolis.
