Marlins' Weathers Overcomes Head Injury to Pitch Against Rays

Ryan Weathers took the mound Saturday, but not without incident. Just before the bottom of the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, a throw from catcher Nick Fortes struck Weathers on the head, knocking off his cap and sending him to the ground.

As he fell, Weathers instinctively reached for his head, prompting athletic trainers to rush to his aid. The scene was tense, with the pitcher face down on the mound as medical staff assessed his condition.

Despite the alarming moment, Weathers, son of former MLB reliever David Weathers, returned to pitch three innings. He faced the Rays with remarkable composure, needing only eight pitches to complete the first inning. However, after throwing 57 pitches in total and allowing four runs—three earned—on three hits and a walk, he was removed from the game for precautionary reasons.
