Sherrone Moore, the former Michigan football coach, was dismissed from his position on December 10, following troubling reports of his behavior leading up to the firing. Sources indicate that Moore, 39, exhibited unusual conduct, including confrontational interactions with assistant coaches.
ESPN analyst Pete Thamel discussed the atmosphere within the Michigan program shortly after the news broke. “There’s been a lot of uneasiness on the Michigan staff,” Thamel stated. “Sources have told me Sherrone Moore had been acting strange, berating assistant coaches, not acting in a normal way.” He noted that tensions had escalated recently, culminating in the decision to terminate Moore.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed the firing, citing “for cause” as the reason. In a statement, he revealed that an investigation uncovered credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Moore and a staff member. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Manuel emphasized.
Thamel remarked on the explicit nature of Manuel’s statement, which is uncommon in such situations. “It is rare that you get a statement like the one Michigan had, being as explicit as they are,” he noted, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against Moore.

Adding to the narrative, ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that rumors had circulated for weeks regarding potential misconduct. However, he pointed out that a recent investigation had initially found “no evidence of wrongdoing.” “If the school is going to take a step on Wednesday that it did, and announce that it is firing Sherrone Moore for cause, then clearly something this week developed that the school felt like it had irrefutable evidence,” Schefter explained.
Manuel announced Moore’s termination at 4:34 p.m. on Wednesday. Just 24 minutes prior, police responded to a 911 call from the home of the staff member involved, where it was reported that Moore was “attacking” a woman. The caller also alleged that Moore had been “stalking her for months.” Officers subsequently took one individual into custody at the scene, identified as Moore by The Detroit News.
The Pittsfield Township Police Department released a statement regarding the incident, indicating that due to the nature of the allegations and ongoing investigation, further details could not be disclosed at this time. “Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” they stated.
Moore was booked into Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and remains in custody as of Thursday evening. He is expected to face arraignment on December 12; however, no formal charges have been filed yet.
In light of these developments, Michigan has appointed associate head coach Biff Poggi as interim head coach as the Wolverines prepare for their upcoming Citrus Bowl matchup against the University of Texas on December 31.
