Nate Rohr Takes the Mic as New Kansas City Chiefs Announcer

Nate Rohr found himself in the spotlight just days before the Kansas City Chiefs' home opener, stepping in as the new public address announcer at Arrowhead Stadium. The transition came swiftly after Dale Carter, who held the position for 16 seasons, announced his resignation on September 11.

“The Chiefs reached out Thursday about my availability for the game that Sunday,” Rohr recounted in an exclusive interview. “They mentioned there was a chance they might need me. I confirmed my willingness, and later that day, they called back to say, ‘Hey, we need you.’”

Rohr, who also serves as the PA announcer for University of Nebraska football, has a connection to the Chiefs through Brad Young, the team’s Director of Live & Gameday Production. Their relationship dates back to 2018 when Young tapped Rohr to fill in for a game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“I think they liked what I had done, so that was how they selected me,” he said, expressing excitement about the opportunity. The role opened up after Carter's departure, which he described as a significant change for the organization.

Carter's resignation stemmed from a dispute over his iconic “It’s. Third. Down.” call. In a Facebook post, he expressed frustration over being told he could no longer perform this signature line, indicating that the team wanted a new voice to “shake things up.”

“I reached out to [Carter] on social media to thank him,” Rohr shared. “In a tough situation like this where a change is made, it could be challenging for the new guy coming in. But he’s been really supportive.”

Rohr noted that Carter congratulated him on his new role and wished him well, which he appreciated given the circumstances. As for his own take on the third down call, Rohr plans to add his personal flair by extending the word “third” as long as possible.

“One rule I didn’t know until Sunday is that by NFL regulations, nothing can come over the public address system after 20 seconds on the play clock,” he explained. “In college football, you can have announcements until the center is over the ball.”

Despite these constraints, Rohr is eager to make his mark. He will return to Arrowhead Stadium when the Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens on September 28.
