Orioles Halt Phillies' Winning Streak with 5-1 Victory

Aug 06 2025

Coby Mayo launched a three-run homer, while Jeremiah Jackson marked his major league debut with a double and an RBI, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

After the Phillies dominated the first two games of the series with a combined 18 runs, Baltimore's Trevor Rogers (5-2) effectively halted their momentum. He delivered a strong performance, allowing just one run on eight hits and striking out six over six innings.

Relievers Dietrich Enns and Keegan Akin maintained the lead, with Enns throwing two scoreless innings before Akin closed out the game in the ninth.

The turning point came in the fourth inning when Orioles starter Ranger Suarez (8-5) faced a sudden onslaught. Singles from Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman set the stage for Jackson, who pulled a line drive down the left-field line, bringing Henderson home.

Moments later, Mayo, also recently called up, sent a powerful shot into the left-field seats, extending the lead to 4-0.

Philadelphia managed to respond in the fifth inning with Trea Turnerโ€™s RBI single, but their offensive efforts fell short. Turner, who recorded three hits in the game, was left stranded after a one-out triple in the third and again in the fifth when he and catcher Rafael Marchan were left on base following Kyle Schwarber's strikeout and Bryce Harper's groundout.

Suarez allowed an additional run from Jackson Holliday's single before exiting in the seventh inning. Enns then faced Turner, who doubled but was met with a fierce strikeout sequence as he dispatched Schwarber, Harper, and Nick Castellanos in succession.

Mayo's fourth home run of the season capped off a strong performance for Baltimore. In contrast, Schwarber, despite his impressive 40 homers this season, struggled significantly, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and grounding into a double play.

The Orioles will take a break on Thursday before welcoming the Athletics for a three-game series. Tomoyuki Sugano (8-5, 4.42 ERA) is slated to start for Baltimore on Friday. Meanwhile, the Phillies will also have a day off before heading to Texas for three games against the Rangers, with Cristopher Sanchez (10-3, 2.40) set to face Merrill Kelly (9-6, 3.22) on Friday.
