Otto Kemp Shines with First 4-Hit Game in Phillies' Victory
Otto Kemp's presence in the Phillies' lineup is undeniable, igniting a spark that resonates throughout the clubhouse. His infectious energy has quickly made him a fan favorite.
Arriving at the ballpark a full eight hours before game time, Kemp's dedication is evident, as noted by teammate Nick Castellanos. This commitment is not only benefiting Kemp but also elevating the performance of his teammates.
"He's got a lot of fire," Castellanos remarked. "He's living his dream right now, right? Fresh in the big leagues, a lot of energy ... It's just fun to watch."
On Sunday, Kemp recorded his first four-hit game in the majors, contributing to an impressive 18-hit offensive display in an 11-4 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays. His performance raised his batting average to .345 over eight games with the Phillies. During a recent six-game home stand, he hit .417, scoring five runs and driving in four RBIs—all achieved in the last three games.
The Phillies have consistently racked up double-digit hits, achieving this feat in five of their last six games. This surge in offensive production is no coincidence.
"He's had great at-bats. He really has," said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. "Whenever a guy comes up for the first time, it creates new energy in the clubhouse because guys are excited for him."
Kemp has solidified his role at the bottom of the lineup, boasting a .368 average as the No. 8 hitter and an impressive .455 when leading off an inning. Since Kemp joined the lineup on June 7, the Phillies have averaged .285 at the plate, placing them among the top five teams in baseball.
"It's nice to chip in where I can," Kemp stated. "Trying to be a table setter, really just doing what the game is asking me to do. That's kinda been the mentality. Just see what the game is telling me to do on any given at-bat and try to execute, then pass it off to the next guy."

In just eight games, Kemp has already notched multiple three-hit games, becoming the first Phillies player since Art Mahan in 1940 to achieve multiple games with three or more hits within his first eight games. This season alone, he has recorded four games with four or more hits—three in Triple-A Lehigh Valley and one with the Phillies—after managing just one such game in his first three professional seasons combined.
"For me, it's ... I believe in my swing," Kemp explained. "I believe in what we created and it's a result of that. It's good to know I can trust myself and my swing. It will be what it needs to be at the end of the day."
The Phillies have secured five victories in their last six games, largely due to Kemp's invigorating presence. His addition has been a boon for an already strong team, and he is relishing every moment spent in Philadelphia.
Castellanos captured it perfectly.
"This is what you dream of," Kemp concluded. "This is what you play for."
