Blue Jays Overcome Deficit with Late Surge to Sweep Athletics

Jun 01 2025

Addison Barger launched a three-run homer in the eighth inning, propelling the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, capping off a four-game sweep.

The pivotal moment came when Barger's 412-foot blast off Justin Sterner (1-2) marked his fifth home run of the season and his third in just three games. This loss extended the Athletics' losing streak to six games, with the team now having dropped 17 of their last 18 contests.

In a remarkable eighth inning, the Blue Jays scored six runs, showcasing their offensive prowess. This inning stands as their second-largest scoring output of the series, following an impressive eight-run second inning during a 12-0 rout on Thursday.

Oakland's pitching woes continued, as they have now allowed at least one home run in 14 consecutive games, totaling 32 home runs surrendered during this stretch.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk each contributed significantly with two hits and two RBIs, helping Toronto secure their fifth consecutive win and ninth in their last 13 games.

Erik Swanson (1-0) earned the win despite giving up a run in his single inning of relief. He made his season debut after being activated from the injured list, having missed time due to a nerve issue in his arm.

Toronto's comeback was particularly crucial for outfielder George Springer, who had a misstep in the fifth inning when he was tagged out while attempting to advance from second to third on Kirk's two-out double.

The Athletics have faced a tough stretch, being swept in four of their last five series.

Looking ahead, Athletics right-hander Luis Severino (1-4, 3.89 ERA) is slated to start against Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (5-2, 2.57) on Monday. Meanwhile, Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis (2-6, 5.04 ERA) is set to face Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-2, 2.96) on Tuesday.
