Phillies Place Aaron Nola on 60-Day IL, Promote Buddy Kennedy

Jun 19 2025

The Philadelphia Phillies announced Thursday that right-hander Aaron Nola has been placed on the 60-day injured list. This decision comes just a week after he sustained a ribcage injury while attempting to recover from a sprained right ankle.

Nola has been sidelined since early May due to the ankle issue. Last week, during a planned session in Toronto, he reported stiffness in his right side, which led to the cancellation of his live batting practice. An MRI subsequently revealed a stress reaction in his ribcage.

In his second season of a seven-year, $172 million contract, Nola holds a career record of 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA over 11 seasons with the Phillies. He has made six consecutive opening day starts from 2018 to 2023. This year, however, he struggled significantly, posting a 1-7 record with a 6.16 ERA across nine starts before his ankle injury on May 8 during pregame agility drills.

In a related move, the Phillies have selected infielder Buddy Kennedy's contract from Triple-A Lehigh Valley ahead of their game against the Miami Marlins. Infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson has been optioned to the IronPigs.

Kennedy, 26, has had an impressive season at Lehigh Valley, hitting .283 with eight home runs and 40 RBIs in 61 games. He was also named the International League Player of the Month for May. In his major league career spanning three seasons with the Diamondbacks, Tigers, and Phillies, he has played in 54 games, recording a .203 batting average with two home runs and 19 RBIs.

Wilson's performance this season included a .194 batting average with one home run and four RBIs over 22 games for the Phillies.
