Phillies Sweep Blue Jays with Castellanos' Grand Slam
Nick Castellanos launched a grand slam, while Zack Wheeler delivered a stellar six-inning performance, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to an 11-4 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.
In addition to Castellanos' power display, Alec Bohm also homered, and Otto Kemp contributed significantly with four hits and two RBIs. This victory marks the Phillies' fifth win in their last six games.
For Toronto, Ernie Clement stood out with three hits, and Will Robertson, in his major league debut, added one of the team's three RBIs.
Wheeler (7-2) was dominant on the mound, yielding just one earned run on four hits, striking out nine batters without issuing a walk. The ace right-hander showcased his skills by fanning the side in both the second and third innings.
The Phillies provided immediate support for Wheeler, as Trea Turner opened the game with a double on the very first pitch. He quickly crossed home plate when Kyle Schwarber followed with a single off José Berríos (2-3). Philadelphia capitalized on Berríos’ struggles, scoring six runs on nine hits in just 4 2/3 innings. Remarkably, Berríos had allowed only one earned run over his previous 18 2/3 innings.
Castellanos put the game out of reach in the sixth inning, crushing an 85-mph slider over the left-field wall for his seventh home run of the season, extending the lead to 10-2.
In a notable defensive play, Blue Jays left fielder Alan Roden made a spectacular catch in the fifth inning, robbing Castellanos of extra bases as he crashed headfirst into the left-field wall. The impact left a mark on the padded wall, but Roden managed to stay in the game after a brief moment on the ground.
Kemp's impressive performance continues, boasting a .345 batting average over eight games since his call-up on June 7 to replace injured slugger Bryce Harper (wrist).
The Blue Jays will kick off a six-game homestand on Tuesday against Arizona, with RHP Chris Bassitt (7-3, 3.70) set to face RHP Brandon Pfaadt (8-4, 5.50).
Meanwhile, the Phillies are gearing up for a four-game series against Miami starting Monday, where RHP Mick Abel (1-0, 2.35) will take on RHP Sandy Alcantara (3-7, 7.14).
