Tigers Triumph Over Reds 11-5 Amid Rainy Conditions

Jun 14 2025

Gleyber Torres launched two home runs while Riley Greene contributed four RBIs, propelling the Detroit Tigers to an 11-5 victory against the Cincinnati Reds on a rain-soaked Friday evening.

Greene's performance included a solo homer in the third inning and a pivotal three-run double in the sixth, marking a significant moment as the Tigers improved their record to 19-4 in series openers. The Reds saw TJ Friedl and Elly De La Cruz also go deep, but it wasn't enough to secure a win.

Torres wasted no time, hitting a leadoff homer on the very first pitch from Nick Martinez (4-7), marking his fourth career leadoff home run, with previous ones recorded during his time with the Yankees.

Friedl responded in the third, tying the game with his own homer off Keider Montero (3-1). However, Greene quickly regained the lead for Detroit with a shot over the Cincinnati bullpen, making it 2-1.

In the fourth inning, Javier Báez extended the Tigers' lead to 3-1 with another homer. Yet, De La Cruz answered back in the fifth with his 14th home run, contributing to a total of five solo homers in the game.

The Tigers broke away in the sixth inning, scoring four runs. After Báez was walked by Martinez, Scott Barlow took over but struggled, allowing a single and another walk to load the bases. Torres then added to the score with a sacrifice fly before Taylor Rogers entered the fray.

Jahmai Jones' infield single reloaded the bases once more, and Greene delivered a three-run double past a diving Spencer Steer in left field, pushing the score to 7-2. An intentional walk and an error further complicated matters for Cincinnati, leading to yet another bases-loaded situation before Ian Gibault came in to secure the final two outs.

Torres added his second homer of the night in the seventh inning, while Báez hit an RBI double during a three-run eighth. Cincinnati managed to respond with an RBI double from De La Cruz and scored three runs in the ninth, but it was too late.

The game was delayed by seven minutes due to rain that persisted throughout the night. Had Steer made a diving catch in the sixth inning, the Reds might have escaped that frame only trailing 4-2.

Rogers reached a career milestone with 201 RBIs, becoming the first Tigers player to achieve 200 before turning 25 since Travis Fryman did so in 1993.

Looking ahead, Detroit's right-hander Jack Flaherty (5-6, 3.41) is scheduled to face off against RHP Brady Singer (6-4, 4.59) on Saturday.
