Rockies Triumph Over Marlins 6-4

Jun 03 2025

Hunter Goodman showcased his power at the plate, hitting two home runs, including a pivotal two-run blast in the fifth inning, as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Miami Marlins 6-4 on Monday night. This victory marked a significant moment for the Rockies, ending their fourth eight-game losing streak of the season.

With this win, Colorado improved to 10-50, solidifying their position with the worst 60-game start in modern baseball history. The Rockies now share this dubious distinction with the 1904 Washington Senators and the 1932 Boston Red Sox, both of whom began their seasons at 11-49.

Goodman initiated the scoring with a two-out single in the first inning off pitcher Max Meyer, followed by Thairo Estrada's RBI double that put Colorado ahead early.

However, Goodman’s night took a turn when he committed an error in the bottom of the first, dropping a throw at home plate that allowed Miami to tie the game. Otto Lopez capitalized on this mistake with an RBI single off Germán Márquez, and Eric Wagaman's sacrifice fly pushed Miami ahead 3-1.

Jesús Sánchez extended Miami's lead to 4-1 with a run-scoring double in the second inning.

Goodman responded in the third with a home run, and Tyler Freeman's two-out RBI single in the fourth narrowed the gap to one run.

The fifth inning proved crucial; Ezequiel Tovar led off with a single, and Goodman followed with his ninth homer of the season, giving the Rockies a 5-4 lead.

Keston Hiura made his mark by doubling to start the ninth inning for Colorado, marking his first hit with the team. Sam Hilliard then added an insurance run with a one-out double.

Márquez (2-7) pitched five innings, allowing four runs—three earned—and nine hits. The Rockies' bullpen shone as Jake Bird, Tyler Kinley, and Seth Halvorsen each delivered a scoreless inning before Zach Agnos secured his fourth save in the ninth.

Meyer (3-5) struggled on the mound for Miami, surrendering five runs—four earned—and ten hits over five innings.

Miami has now lost three of its last four games as they begin a six-game homestand. In the ninth inning, Sánchez singled for Miami (23-35) but was forced out at second on a pop fly by Agustín Ramírez that fell in front of Freeman. Agnos quickly ended the game by inducing Kyle Stowers into a double play.

Goodman, now in his third year as a catcher, leads the Rockies in both home runs and RBIs with 34. Looking ahead, Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (2-7, 8.47 ERA) is set to start the middle game of this series on Tuesday, while the Rockies have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
