Twins Fall to Guardians in Extra Innings, 3-2

Aug 02 2025

The Cleveland Guardians edged out the Minnesota Twins 3-2 in a tense 10-inning matchup on Friday night, with Kyle Manzardo delivering the decisive hit. Manzardo's single brought home Brayan Rocchio, marking his second walk-off hit of the season.

In a critical moment, the Guardians loaded the bases against Kody Funderburk (1-1) after Steven Kwan's single and an intentional walk issued to José Ramírez. Manzardo's line drive to left field secured the win for Cleveland, allowing Rocchio, the automatic runner, to score.

Cade Smith (3-4) took the mound for the final two innings, contributing to Cleveland's record of 9-5 since the All-Star break. The Guardians struck first when Ramírez drove in Kwan during the opening inning, then stole second base, achieving a notable milestone as the 17th player in MLB history to reach 275 steals and 275 home runs. He is also the first primary third baseman to achieve this feat and joins Carlos Beltrán as the second switch-hitter to do so.

Rocchio extended the Guardians' lead to 2-0 in the second inning, bringing Carlos Santana home against Twins starter Joe Ryan, who pitched six innings. Meanwhile, Cleveland's Gavin Williams showcased his skills with eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings.

Prior to the game, Minnesota made significant roster changes, promoting four pitchers and four position players from Triple-A St. Paul. This followed a whirlwind of nine trades executed within 24 hours leading up to Thursday's deadline.

With 25 players in uniform—one shy of the roster limit—the Twins navigated a busy period that saw a total of 26 players exchanged over four days. Looking ahead, Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee (7-9, 4.39 ERA), who has won his last three starts, is set to pitch on Saturday. The Twins' manager Rocco Baldelli has yet to announce a starting pitcher for the upcoming game.
