Twins' Impressive 13-Game Win Streak Snapped by Brewers in 5-2 Defeat
In a surprising turn of events, the Milwaukee Brewers halted the Minnesota Twins' impressive 13-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Sunday. Jackson Chourio made a jaw-dropping catch, robbing Royce Lewis of what could have been a game-tying homer in the eighth inning, sealing the deal for the Brewers.
Isaac Collins and Sal Frelick were the stars of the show, each driving in two runs to help Milwaukee secure the win. This loss marked the end of the second-longest winning streak in Twins history, just shy of the 15-game streak they had back in 1991, a season that ultimately led to a World Series championship.
The game took a pivotal turn when the Twins were trailing 4-2. Lewis, who had already hit his first homer of the season earlier in the fourth inning, sent a powerful drive to left-center with a runner on second. Chourio, however, had other plans. He timed his jump perfectly, reaching over the wall to snag the ball, leaving the crowd in disbelief.
In the bottom half of the inning, Rhys Hoskins contributed with a sacrifice fly, while Trevor Megill came in to close out the game, earning his sixth save of the season.
Frelick got the Brewers on the board early, singling home Christian Yelich in the second inning, which also ended Minnesota's impressive streak of 34 consecutive shutout innings—a new record for the Twins.
Milwaukee extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Collins hit a clutch bases-loaded, two-out single, followed by Frelick adding another RBI single to the mix.
Twins starter Zebby Matthews, who was called up from the minors, struggled in his outing, giving up four runs and five hits over three innings. On the flip side, Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta had a solid performance, allowing just one run over five innings.
After cutting Milwaukee's lead to 4-1 in the fourth, the Twins had a chance to rally, loading the bases with two outs. But Peralta managed to escape the jam by retiring Ryan Jeffers on a fly ball to right field.
Interestingly, the Brewers have never been shut out in a three-game series, even though they faced that fate in the first two games of their last two series. They bounced back with a 9-5 win at Cleveland after previously losing 5-0 and 2-0.
Looking ahead, the Twins are set to kick off a three-game home series against the Cleveland Guardians. The scheduled starters for Monday's game are Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (4-1, 3.72 ERA) and Guardians lefty Logan Allen (2-2, 3.70).
Meanwhile, the Brewers will begin a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles, with Monday's matchup featuring Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester (1-2, 4.59) going up against Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (3-5, 5.36).
