White Sox Surge in Seventh Inning to Defeat Giants
Kyle Teel delivered a pivotal two-run double in the seventh inning, propelling the Chicago White Sox to a 5-2 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. This win marked a significant moment for the White Sox, as it extended Justin Verlander's winless streak to 13 starts.
Jonathan Cannon, alongside five relievers, struck out a total of 11 batters throughout the game. Tyler Gilbert (2-1) contributed to the effort by striking out two in his inning of work, while Mike Vasil secured his second save after navigating a walk in the ninth.
In the seventh, Mike Tauchman and Chase Meidroth initiated the rally with singles off Erik Miller (4-1). Following a walk drawn by Miguel Vargas, the bases were loaded. Teel's double brought in two runs, and a balk by Walker added another run before Lenyn Sosa's single capped off the four-run inning.
Verlander, pitching under occasionally rainy conditions, allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings. This marks the longest winless streak for a Giants starter since at least 1901. Prior to joining San Francisco in January, Verlander's longest winless stretch was seven starts.
For the Giants, Christian Koss recorded two hits, and Patrick Bailey's double drove in a run. The team has struggled recently, losing 11 of their last 16 games.
Tauchman and Teel each had three hits for the White Sox, who have only managed five wins in their last 17 games. Cannon, reinstated from the injured list before this matchup, allowed one run over three innings.
In the fifth inning, Willy Adames drew a four-pitch walk against Jordan Leasure with the bases loaded, giving the Giants a brief 2-1 lead.
The Giants threatened again in the eighth by loading the bases, but Vasil executed a crucial 6-4-3 double play to escape the inning, celebrating as he left the mound.
Verlander is now 38 wins away from reaching the milestone of 300 career victories.
Looking ahead, the Giants will have RHP Logan Webb (7-5, 2.52 ERA) starting Monday's series opener against Arizona, while RHP Ryne Nelson (4-2, 3.71) is set to pitch for the Diamondbacks.
On the other side, the White Sox will send RHP Shane Smith (3-5, 3.38) to the mound on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, facing RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-6, 2.61).
