Iga Swiatek Faces Fan Backlash After Trivia Missteps

Jun 26 2025

In a lighthearted yet revealing moment, Iga Swiatek, the five-time major champion and self-proclaimed Taylor Swift enthusiast, found herself in a bit of a pickle during a trivia challenge.

On June 25, the Bad Homburg Open shared a video on Instagram featuring Swiatek participating in the “Shakespeare or Swift” game, where she had to discern quotes from the iconic playwright and the pop sensation.

The first quote presented was, “On the very moment all was lost.” Swiatek, seemingly perplexed, responded, “That’s it? That’s the whole line?” before mistakenly attributing it to Shakespeare.

In reality, the lyric belongs to Swift’s 2020 track “Evermore,” featuring Bon Iver. “Oh, my God. But your voice made it sound like Shakespeare,” she remarked to the social media admin, expressing her frustration with the challenge.

Next up was “In black ink, my love may still shine bright.” Swiatek again faltered, incorrectly identifying it as a Swift lyric when it actually originates from Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 65.” “I’m bad at that,” she admitted after her second misstep.

However, her luck turned with the quote “What will become of me once I’ve lost my novelty,” which she correctly identified as coming from Swift’s “Nothing New,” a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers from 2021.

But the tide turned once more with “All that glitters is not gold,” which Swiatek mistakenly attributed to Swift. This famous line is actually from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. “Oh, my God, Swifties are gonna kick me out,” she exclaimed in exasperation.

Finally, she was presented with “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” This time, Swiatek nailed it, correctly identifying the line from Hamlet while giving a playful wink to the camera. “I knew that,” she quipped.

The video concluded with a plea for leniency from fans: “Swifties x @iga.swiatek fans — this one’s for you! (Please don’t kick her out of the fandom though, okay?),” it read. The social media team humorously noted their own allegiance to Swift.

Support flooded in through the comments section, with one fan reassuringly stating, “That’s funny! IGA, don’t worry, he deliberately chose similar quotes to be sneaky. You still managed to hit a few!”

Swiatek’s admiration for Swift is well-documented; she attended Swift’s Eras Tour in Liverpool in June 2024 and even received a handwritten note from the artist congratulating her on her recent French Open victory. “I’m dead,” she shared on X. “Yes, I cried many times during the show. Yes, it was incredible. You are amazing @taylorswift13.”
