Inter Miami Faces Al Ahly in Club World Cup Opener
Inter Miami is set to make its mark on the global soccer stage as it enters the FIFA Club World Cup, a significant leap for a franchise that only five years ago was an MLS newcomer.
With Lionel Messi leading the charge, the team co-owned by David Beckham is poised to capture the attention of soccer fans worldwide. The tournament kicks off with Miami facing Al Ahly, Africa's most decorated club, at Hard Rock Stadium.
Coach Javier Mascherano expressed optimism about the challenge ahead. "This is a competition that will let us see where we are standing as a team," he stated, acknowledging the low expectations surrounding Miami's performance. "No one expects us to go far, but this should be an advantage." His comments reflect a unique perspective; unlike in the national league, where Miami is often seen as a favorite, here they can surprise.
Al Ahly, established in 1907, boasts an impressive record with 45 national league titles and 39 domestic cups. Their pedigree is undeniable, having qualified for the Club World Cup three times by winning the African Champions League.
Miami's entry into this prestigious tournament has raised eyebrows. Secured through the MLS Supporters' Shield, their inclusion was met with skepticism, especially after failing to clinch the MLS Cup last season. Critics question how a team without a national title could compete for the title of world champion.
Yet, Miami has consistently defied expectations. "Our club will have a global vision," managing owner Jorge Mas declared at the franchise's inception in 2018, long before they had a team or even a name.
The arrival of Messi has transformed not just Miami but also Major League Soccer. His influence is palpable; highlights of his goals circulate widely on social media, enhancing the league's visibility. "The league was growing before, but ever since his arrival it's grown a lot faster," teammate Benjamin Cremaschi noted.

In 2023, Miami captured the Leagues Cup and set an MLS record for points in a season, achievements that bolster their confidence heading into the Club World Cup.
Mascherano emphasized the significance of this tournament for a relatively young club. "This is the most important competition in the history of our club," he remarked. While European teams are typically favored, he believes surprises can happen. "Why can we not be excited that we can spring a surprise?"
To advance beyond the first stage, Miami must secure a victory against Al Ahly, with formidable opponents like Palmeiras and Porto also in Group A.
For Messi, this tournament presents a new challenge as an underdog. "The expectations I have are different to the ones I had when I played for other teams," he admitted. "I'm eager and I look forward to competing against the best and doing well."
Regardless of the outcome, Luis Suarez believes Miami's trajectory is just beginning. "We know how the club is improving now," he said. "In the next two or three years, Inter Miami will become bigger and bigger."
