Josh Smith Powers Rangers to 8-1 Victory Over Cardinals
Josh Smith delivered a stellar performance, driving in four runs with a two-run homer and a two-run double, as the Texas Rangers triumphed over the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 on Sunday. This victory marked a significant moment for the Rangers, who secured their first series win since sweeping the Colorado Rockies earlier this month.
The Rangers improved their record to 29-31, taking two of three games from the Cardinals (33-26), who faced their second series loss in the last eleven outings. The game began with the Cardinals taking an early lead; Lars Nootbaar walked to start the first inning and later scored on Willson Contreras' two-out single.
Smith ignited the Rangers' offense in the second inning, hitting an outside changeup into the left-field corner, which initiated a two-out rally that began with Marcus Semien's single. Semien, who had two hits and two walks in the game, also scored during Texas' five-run eighth inning following Smith's homer to right field.
On the mound, Jacob deGrom (5-2) continued his impressive form, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks over six innings while striking out four batters. His performance marked the eighth consecutive start in which he allowed two runs or fewer.
Erick Fedde (3-5) pitched six innings for the Cardinals, giving up two runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out five. The 32-year-old right-hander was seeking his first win since a complete game shutout against Washington on May 9.
Semien's contributions throughout the series were notable; his performance raised his batting average from .173 to .201, marking his highest average since opening day. The Cardinals have struggled historically against the Rangers, holding a .333 all-time winning percentage in regular-season play against them, which is their lowest against any opponent.
Looking ahead, Cardinals right-hander Andre Pallante (4-3, 4.23 ERA) is set to open the "I-70 Series" against Kansas City on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (5-2, 1.64) will take the mound in Tampa Bay as Texas embarks on a nine-game road trip.
