Marlins Edge Giants 1-0 Behind Cabrera's Strong Performance

May 31 2025

Edward Cabrera delivered a stellar performance on the mound, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the Miami Marlins clinched a narrow 1-0 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Javier Sanoja's timely RBI single in the second inning proved to be the game's only run.

Robbie Ray, the Giants' starter, showcased his skills by retiring the last 15 batters he faced over seven innings. Despite his efforts, which included scattering two hits, walking three, and striking out nine, Ray (7-1) fell short of becoming the first pitcher to reach eight wins this season.

Cabrera (2-1) allowed six hits, issued three walks, and struck out six batters. The Marlins struggled offensively, managing only three hits against Giants pitchers for the second consecutive game.

Sanoja's crucial hit came after Ray issued back-to-back walks to Dane Myers and Nick Fortes. Sanoja's line drive to right field brought Myers home, marking the only run needed for Cabrera and the bullpen.

Defensively, Myers made a highlight-reel catch in the seventh inning, leaping to snag a drive from Jung Hoo Lee while colliding with the center field wall, preventing a potential scoring opportunity for the Giants.

Another defensive standout was left fielder Heriberto Hernández, who robbed Tyler Fitzgerald of an extra-base hit with a spectacular leaping catch at the wall in the fourth inning.

Following Cabrera's exit, Ronny Henriquez and Anthony Bender combined to secure the next seven outs before Calvin Faucher closed out the game for his fourth save.

The Giants struggled offensively, stranding 11 runners throughout the game. This marked their 13th consecutive game of scoring four or fewer runs.

Henriquez entered with two runners on base and two outs, striking out Fitzgerald to extinguish San Francisco's threat in the sixth inning.

Cabrera's performance improved his ERA from 7.23 at the end of April to 4.14 after five outings in May.

Looking ahead, Giants right-hander Hayden Birdsong (2-1, 2.48 ERA) is set to start the series finale on Sunday against Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.15).
