Otto Kemp's Major League Dream Becomes Reality with Phillies
Otto Kemp stepped into the Phillies' clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park for the first time this week, taking a moment to absorb the atmosphere. His journey to this point is remarkable, especially for an undrafted player from Division II Point Loma Nazarene University.
"I wanted to keep the moment special and fresh, not knowing what I was walking into," Kemp explained. "It wasn't about seeking out an opportunity; it was about keeping the dream alive and remembering my goals." His perspective reflects the rarity of his achievement—making it to the majors is no small feat for someone in his position.
The past two years have seen Kemp ascend rapidly through the minor leagues, catching the attention of the Phillies. Starting the 2024 season in Clearwater, he showcased his talent across three levels, ultimately landing in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. There, he led the International League with 14 home runs and an OPS of 1.010, boasting a .313 batting average.
As his performance improved, so did his confidence. "You know you're on the radar and giving yourself the best chance," he said. "You start to think about it, but you can't get ahead of yourself. It's about focusing on today and doing your best." This mindset has been crucial as he navigated his path to the big leagues.
Kemp's call-up came late Friday night while the IronPigs were in Charlotte. By Saturday morning, he found himself in Pittsburgh, ready for a 4:05 p.m. game. The whirlwind day included calls to family and friends, urging them to join him in celebrating this milestone.
"It was a whirlwind, but this is what you dream about," Kemp said, reflecting on the adrenaline of the moment. "I had to enjoy it while also preparing to compete and win." Balancing excitement with focus is key as he embarks on this new chapter.
Now five days into his major league career, Kemp still finds it surreal. His work ethic remains steadfast, demonstrating versatility as he fills various roles for the team. He made his first start at first base on Wednesday after previously playing there in the minors.
"We've been doing some work, and he told Bobby (Dickerson) and me that he's comfortable at first base," said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. With Bryce Harper's return on the horizon, Thomson noted that Kemp's adaptability will be valuable.
In addition to first base, Kemp will also see time in left field and second base as needed. He is fully embracing life in the majors, soaking in every experience.
"It's been really cool to be around these guys and see how everything operates," Kemp remarked. "I'm just going out there, trying to compete, win baseball games, and not make this game bigger than it needs to be." His grounded approach may well serve him well as he continues to navigate this exciting journey.
