Cubs Crush Marlins 14-1: Suzuki Shines with 2-Run Homer
In a game that was nothing short of a slugfest, Seiya Suzuki put on a show, hitting a two-run homer and driving in four runs as the Chicago Cubs trounced the Miami Marlins 14-1 on Tuesday night. Honestly, it was one of those games where everything clicked for the Cubs.
Kyle Tucker also joined the party, going deep and adding two singles along with a walk. Justin Turner was on fire too, with two singles and a double, while Matt Shaw contributed with a double and a single. The Cubs matched their season-high with a whopping 21 hits, which is just insane.
On the mound, Jameson Taillon (3-3) was solid, allowing just one run and four hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out two, breaking a two-start losing streak. You could tell he was in control, and it showed.
Tucker kicked things off with his 11th homer of the season, putting the Cubs up 1-0 in the first inning. But Miami's Nick Fortes quickly tied it up with a solo shot in the third. It was a brief moment of hope for the Marlins, but the Cubs were just getting started.
The sixth inning was where the game really got out of hand. Suzuki's two-run blast capped off an eight-run inning against Miami's relievers Calvin Faucher (2-2) and Lake Bachar, pushing the score to 9-1. Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong both hit consecutive RBI singles, and Nico Hoerner followed up with a two-run single. Turner added a sacrifice fly, and Shaw's RBI double made it 7-1. It was a wild inning, to say the least.
But wait, there’s more! The Cubs didn’t stop there. They piled on five more runs in the ninth against position player Javier Sanoja, with Suzuki and Michael Busch both hitting two-run doubles. Talk about a party!
Miami's starter Ryan Weathers had a decent outing, allowing one run and five hits while striking out five in five innings. This was only his second start of the season, both against the Cubs, after spending time on the injured list.
In a bit of good news for the Cubs, they activated outfielder Ian Happ from the injured list on Tuesday. Happ managed to get an RBI single in the ninth after struggling through his first five at-bats.
Faucher came in to relieve Weathers, who was pulled after 80 pitches, and things went downhill fast. He walked Suzuki to kick off the sixth and then allowed five straight singles without recording an out. Ouch.
This game marked the 24th time this season that the Cubs have scored four or more runs in an inning. They’re really making a habit of it!
Looking ahead, Cubs RHP Cade Horton (2-0, 6.00) is set to take the mound for the series finale against Marlins RHP Max Meyer (3-4, 4.47). Should be interesting!
