Matos' Power Play Leads Giants to Victory Over Marlins

Jun 01 2025

On Sunday, Luis Matos delivered a pivotal three-run home run, propelling the San Francisco Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.

The scoring began in the second inning when Wilmer Flores contributed with a groundout, bringing in one run. Matos then stepped up in the third, connecting with a 2-0 changeup from Ryan Weathers (1-1) that soared 390 feet to left-center, extending the Giants' lead to 4-0. This marked a notable moment, as San Francisco has now gone 14 consecutive games without exceeding four runs in total.

Hayden Birdsong (3-1) showcased his skills on the mound, striking out five batters while allowing just five hits and one run during his second start in the Giants' rotation. He effectively limited Miami to two hits through five innings—both doubles from Xavier Edwards—before the Marlins began to rally in the sixth. A series of three consecutive hits culminated in Otto Lopez's RBI single, narrowing the score to 4-1.

Camilo Doval secured his second four-out save of the series and his seventh save of the season, demonstrating his reliability in high-pressure situations.

Xavier Edwards made headlines by setting a Marlins franchise record with five hits in just his second game back from a left mid back strain. He contributed to Miami's scoring in the seventh inning, driving in Eric Wagaman with an infield single, bringing the score to 4-2.

Heliot Ramos also made an impact for San Francisco, recording two singles and a stolen base while scoring the team's first run in the third inning.

Weathers had a strong outing, striking out a season-high seven batters, walking four, and allowing five hits over six innings of work.

Doval faced a challenging eighth inning, inheriting two runners with two outs. He walked pinch-hitter Dane Meyers but managed to strike out Javier Sanoja, escaping a bases-loaded situation.

Throughout the series, San Francisco's pitching staff effectively limited Miami to just three runs.

Looking ahead, Giants right-hander Logan Webb (5-5, 2.82) is set to start the opener of a four-game home series against San Diego. Meanwhile, Marlins right-hander Max Meyer (3-4, 4.53) will take the mound for the first of three games against Colorado.
