Kyle Schwarber Smashes 300th HR as Phillies Overcome Rockies
Kyle Schwarber made history on Monday night, hitting his 300th career home run with a jaw-dropping 466-foot solo shot to right field. This milestone helped propel the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-3 victory against the struggling Colorado Rockies. Edmundo Sosa also shined, racking up four hits, including his first home run of the season, as the Phillies extended their winning streak to four games.
Alec Bohm played a crucial role too, smashing a two-run homer during a four-run eighth inning that turned the tide for Philadelphia. The Phillies have been on a roll lately, and this game was no exception.
Joe Ross (2-1) picked up the win in relief after Cristopher Sánchez delivered six solid innings on the mound. Meanwhile, Rockies starter Kyle Freeland had a decent outing, allowing just one run on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings, but he still couldn't snag his first win of the season. Ezequiel Tovar was a bright spot for Colorado, hitting a homer and driving in two runs, but the team fell to a dismal 8-39, marking the worst 47-game start in modern baseball history.
Tovar kicked things off with a solo homer in the first inning, but the Rockies' bullpen faltered, unable to maintain the lead. The Phillies managed to score a run in the seventh thanks to Bryce Harper's sacrifice fly, and then took control in the eighth. Bohm's third homer of the season put them ahead 4-3, and Trea Turner added two more runs with a double to center.
To cap it off, Schwarber and Sosa both hit homers off Scott Alexander, adding three more runs to the scoreboard. Turner had a standout performance, leading off the third inning with one of his three hits, although he was caught stealing by Freeland shortly after. Bryce Harper followed with a single, but Freeland managed to escape the inning without further damage.
Despite only having one win this season, Freeland has shown control, walking just 10 batters in his 10 starts. The two teams are set to face off again on Tuesday night for the second game of their four-game series, with Phillies LHP Jesús Luzardo (4-0, 2.00 ERA) taking on Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela (1-7, 6.39).
