Steelers Respond to Fan Outcry Over Trump Jersey Presentation

Jun 03 2025

Pittsburgh Steelers icon Rocky Bleier made headlines last week when he presented President Trump with a Steelers jersey emblazoned with the number 47 during a rally in western Pennsylvania.

This gesture, however, did not sit well with a segment of the fanbase.

In response to several emails expressing discontent, the Steelers clarified that the presentation was not sanctioned by the organization. The team emphasized that the opinions of current and former players do not necessarily align with the official stance of the franchise.

During the rally, Trump announced a significant increase in tariffs on imported steel, flanked by quarterback Mason Rudolph and safety Myles Killebrew. The atmosphere intensified as the crowd erupted into a chant of "Here we go, Steelers."

"I'm a fan of your Steelers," Trump remarked, singling out Rudolph for praise. "I think he's going to get a big shot. He's tall, he's handsome, he's got a great arm. I have a feeling he's going to be the guy."

Rudolph acknowledged the backlash but maintained a level-headed perspective. "That's the nature of social media," he stated after a voluntary team workout. "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Speech is free. Par for the course."

Bleier, Rudolph, and Killebrew are not alone in their connections to Trump; former Steelers stars Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell have also shared moments with him during campaign events in western Pennsylvania.

Additionally, former Steelers owner Dan Rooney served as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012 under President Obama, highlighting the franchise's long-standing ties to political figures.
