Twins Triumph Over Tigers with Keaschall's Stellar Performance
Luke Keaschall continued his impressive return to the field, driving in three runs for the Minnesota Twins as they defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-4 on Wednesday.
In just nine games in the major leagues, Keaschall boasts a .393 batting average. His season was briefly interrupted by a broken arm in April, but since his return on Tuesday, he has recorded four hits and six RBIs across two games.
Thomas Hatch, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals just days prior, earned his first win of the season after delivering 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
On the opposing side, Jack Flaherty suffered the loss, allowing six runs over 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The Twins quickly established a lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Singles from Alan Roden and Matt Wallner set the stage for Keaschall, who delivered a two-out double to bring them home. This performance followed his three-RBI game on Tuesday, where he also hit his first career home run.
In the second inning, Minnesota extended their lead to 3-0 when Brooks Lee scored on a wild pitch. However, Spencer Torkelson responded for Detroit with a homer, narrowing the gap to two runs.
The Tigers continued to fight back; Zach McKinstry led off the third with a home run, and later in the inning, Kerry Carpenter's two-run shot put Detroit ahead 4-3.
But the Twins were not done. Lee homered in the fourth inning, and by the fifth, they regained control with RBI doubles from Ryan Jeffers and Keaschall, pushing the score to 6-4. Austin Martin and Roden added to the tally with home runs off Tyler Holton in the sixth.
In a critical moment during the eighth inning, with runners on first and third and one out, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch opted to send Jahmai Jones to bat for Carpenter. However, Kody Funderburke induced a ground ball that resulted in an inning-ending double play.
Keaschall's performance has been noteworthy; he has reached base in all nine of his career games, marking the second-longest streak in Twins history. Glenn Williams holds the record with a 13-game streak from 2005.
Both teams will have a day off on Thursday before resuming play over the weekend. The Twins are set to start ace RHP Joe Ryan (10-5, 2.83) against the Kansas City Royals, while Tigers All-Star LHP Tarik Skubal (11-3, 2.18) will take on the Los Angeles Angels.
