Athletics Secure Series Win Over Orioles with 5-1 Victory

Jun 08 2025

Max Muncy launched a home run while Jacob Wilson and Tyler Soderstrom contributed two hits and an RBI each, leading the Athletics to a 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. This win marked the A's first series triumph in more than a month.

Sean Newcomb (1-4) delivered a strong performance in relief, striking out three batters over three scoreless innings, following starter Jacob Lopez. Grant Holman and Mason Miller closed out the game, with Holman pitching a scoreless eighth and Miller wrapping it up with a perfect ninth.

The Athletics last celebrated a series win from May 2-4, when they took two of three games against Miami. Their previous home series victory occurred from April 25-27 against the Chicago White Sox.

In the first inning, the A's jumped ahead 1-0 against Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano. Lawrence Butler opened with a base hit, later scoring on Soderstrom's two-out single.

However, the Orioles equalized in the second inning due to a throwing error by catcher Jhonny Pereda during a pickoff attempt, resulting in an unearned run off Lopez.

Pereda quickly redeemed himself, hitting a go-ahead RBI double in the Athletics' second inning. Butler added another run with a fielder's choice, followed by Wilson's single that extended the lead to 4-1.

Muncy capped off the scoring in the eighth inning with his third home run of the season against Bryan Baker.

Lopez allowed four hits and struck out five over four innings before handing the ball to Newcomb. Sugano (5-4) struggled, giving up four runs—three earned—and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Scott Blewett, who was reacquired by Baltimore from Atlanta on Friday, retired all five batters he faced.

The Orioles entered this game after sweeping the Mariners in Seattle, but Pereda's timely double shifted momentum back to the A's, securing their lead for good.

Wilson finished the game with a 2-for-4 performance, marking his fifth consecutive game with multiple hits and raising his batting average to .372. He trails only Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who began the day hitting .390.

The Athletics are set to face the Los Angeles Angels for three games starting Monday, with neither team announcing a starting pitcher yet. Meanwhile, the Orioles will return home for six games and have not yet revealed their starter for Tuesday's matchup against the Tigers, who will send RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-0, 7.36) to the mound.
