Phillies Extend Winning Streak to Eight with 4-3 Victory Over Athletics

May 24 2025

Trea Turner ignited the game with a leadoff home run, contributing three hits overall, as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Oakland Athletics 4-3 on Friday night, marking their eighth consecutive victory.

In a pivotal ninth inning, Turner’s RBI single capped a three-run surge, providing the Phillies with a crucial buffer just as Nick Kurtz of the Athletics launched a three-run homer in the bottom half.

Zack Wheeler (6-1) continued his impressive form, securing his fourth straight win while extending his scoreless innings streak to 22 2/3. He allowed only three hits and struck out eight batters before exiting with two outs in the seventh after issuing his first two walks. Orion Kerkering stepped in to strike out Luis Urías, quelling the Athletics' threat.

Jordan Romano faced Kurtz's homer before Tanner Banks entered the game, striking out Lawrence Butler for his first save of the season.

The Athletics are now on a ten-game losing streak, their longest since an eleven-game skid in 2023.

Jacob Lopez (0-2), one of five players called up on Friday, pitched seven innings, surrendering three hits, one run, and a walk while striking out eight.

Making his major league debut, highly regarded prospect Denzel Clarke started in center field but went hitless with two strikeouts.

Injury news for the Athletics: infielder Gio Urshela has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left hamstring.

Johan Rojas made a spectacular running catch at the wall in center field for the final out of the eighth inning, leaving Lawrence Butler stranded at third and maintaining the Phillies' lead.

Wheeler's last seven starts have seen him post an impressive 1.56 ERA.

Looking ahead, Cristopher Sánchez (4-1, 3.10 ERA) is set to pitch for the Phillies on Saturday against an unnamed starter for the Athletics.
