Golden State Valkyries Prepare for Showdown with New York Liberty
The Golden State Valkyries are gearing up to host the New York Liberty, the reigning WNBA champions, in a highly anticipated game on Wednesday night. This matchup not only features the Liberty but also Bay Area native Sabrina Ionescu, who returns to her roots.
Currently holding a record of 7-6, the Valkyries are riding a two-game winning streak. Their recent triumphs include a decisive victory over Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on June 19, followed by a commanding 24-point win against the Connecticut Sun, where Kayla Thornton led the charge with 21 points.
The Liberty, boasting a strong 10-3 record, are making their inaugural visit to the Bay Area this season. For Ionescu, a Walnut Creek native and Miramonte High School alumna, this game is particularly special as it marks a homecoming. She was selected as the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft.
However, Ionescu's participation is uncertain due to a neck injury that kept her sidelined during Sunday’s game against the Seattle Storm. She has been marked as a game-time decision. Similarly, Valkyries guard Carla Leite is also listed as a game-time decision due to a back injury.
As part of a five-game homestand at Ballhalla, which has seen sold-out crowds throughout their inaugural season, the Valkyries will also face the Chicago Sky on Friday and the Storm on June 29 before hitting the road again.
