Marlins Hand Justin Verlander Another Loss, Defeat Giants 4-2

Otto Lopez contributed significantly with two hits and an RBI as the Miami Marlins triumphed over the San Francisco Giants 4-2 on Tuesday night, extending Justin Verlander's winless streak to 12 starts this season.

Xavier Edwards, Connor Norby, and Jesús Sánchez each added two hits to the Marlins' offensive effort, marking their third win in four games. Eric Wagaman's RBI double further solidified Miami's lead.

For the Giants, Christian Koss made his mark with a home run, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome.

Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner who returned from the paternity list just a day prior, now stands at 0-5 after his 538th career start, which ties him for the 34th most in MLB history. The 42-year-old pitcher allowed three runs and five hits over five innings, striking out five while walking one.

Wagaman's double in the second inning brought Kyle Stowers home, followed by Norby's two-out single that scored Wagaman.

The Giants managed to tie the game in the fifth when Koss hit a two-run homer off Miami starter Cal Quantrill.

Quantrill, who has not secured a win since May 18, pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs and four hits.

In the seventh inning, Edwards delivered an RBI double that just eluded diving third baseman Casey Schmitt, putting Miami ahead for good.

Cade Gibson (2-3), one of four Marlins relievers, secured the win by retiring four batters. Calvin Faucher closed the game by inducing a game-ending double play from Schmitt in the ninth, earning his eighth save.

In a notable play during the fifth inning, Rafael Devers attempted to score from first base on Heliot Ramos' double but was thrown out at home plate in a 7-6-2 play.

Verlander's current winless streak is not only the longest of his career but also marks a record for the Giants' franchise.

Looking ahead, Giants RHP Logan Webb (7-5, 2.49 ERA) is set to face Marlins RHP Edward Cabrera (2-2, 3.81) on Wednesday.
