Rafael Marchán Shines in Phillies' Victory Over Braves

May 29 2025

Rafael Marchán stepped into the spotlight Thursday, showcasing his skills in a pivotal moment for the Philadelphia Phillies. As a backup catcher, opportunities are scarce, especially with J.T. Realmuto holding down the position for six years.

"I try not to think too much about that," Marchán remarked, emphasizing his focus on preparation. "I just try to come in every day and do my work. I try to control what I can control and be as ready as possible to try and do my job."

Initially, Marchán faced challenges adjusting to his role, but recent performances have shown a marked improvement. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Braves, he delivered one of the best games of his career, reaching base three times and contributing significantly to the team's 5-4 victory.

Marchán's offensive contributions included a two-run home run in the third inning and a hit by pitch that brought in the go-ahead run in the eighth. He also drew a walk in the fifth that led to another run.

However, it was his defensive prowess that truly stood out. Marchán threw out two base runners, including a crucial play in the ninth inning when he caught Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies attempting to steal second base.

Despite hitting just .152 in 33 at-bats this season, Marchán's performance did not go unnoticed. "I've been saying all along this kid's a really good player," said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. "There's not many numbers there, but he really gives us some good at-bats. He understands the strike zone, he's very disciplined, and calls a great game."

Marchán has been on a roll lately, catching consecutive shutouts with pitchers Mick Abel and Ranger Suárez. In this game, Cristopher Sánchez benefited from Marchán's catching, allowing two earned runs over 5.2 innings while striking out five.

The Phillies' starting pitchers have posted an impressive 0.99 ERA during Marchán's last three games behind the plate. "I like him as a catcher," Sánchez stated. "He's tremendous. He's still the same guy; he's just getting the opportunities now."

With the bullpen struggling, Marchán's contributions were vital. Matt Strahm allowed two runs in the eighth for his third blown save of the season, while Jordan Romano faced command issues in the ninth. Marchán's throw to nab Albies provided Romano with a much-needed first out.

Romano faced pressure as the Braves loaded the bases in the ninth. Eli White stood at the plate with two strikes against him but ultimately fell victim to Romano's slider, securing the series win for the Phillies.

Marchán's performance exemplifies why the Phillies boast a 36-19 record through 55 games, with unexpected contributions proving crucial. Thursday afternoon was undoubtedly "The Rafael Marchán Game."

"I feel like a kid when I do something good," Marchán expressed, reflecting on his emotions during the game. "You're really excited. You're really hot. There's a lot of emotion."
