Skubal Dominates with 13 Strikeouts as Tigers Shut Out Twins

Jun 29 2025

Tarik Skubal delivered a masterclass on the mound Sunday night, striking out 13 batters over seven innings, propelling the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory against the Minnesota Twins.

With this win, Skubal improved his record to 10-2, allowing just one hitโ€”a single by Ty France in the fifth inning. His remarkable run now stands at 10-0 with a 1.74 ERA across his last 15 starts, a feat not achieved by a Tigers lefty since Earl Whitehill's 11-game streak in 1930.

Matching his career-high strikeout total, Skubal's performance mirrored his earlier outing on May 25, when he also struck out 13 in a shutout against the Guardians.

On the other side, Chris Paddack struggled for the Twins, surrendering three runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.

The Tigers opened the scoring early with Kerry Carpenter's solo home run in the first inning. Carpenter later added an RBI triple in the fifth before exiting due to a leg injury. Riley Greene contributed with a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Will Vest closed out the game, securing his 13th save of the season.

Skubal's dominance was evident as he struck out eight of the first nine batters faced, including a streak of seven consecutive strikeouts. Byron Buxton managed to lift a fly ball to Greene on the warning track, but his struggles against Skubal continued; he is now just 2 for 15 (.133) lifetime against him, with both hits being home runs.

In June alone, Skubal boasts a perfect 5-0 record, joining an elite group of Tigers pitchers who have gone 4-0 or better in the month over the past 25 years. Notably, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer achieved similar success in 2011 and 2013, respectively, both going on to win the American League Cy Young Award.

Looking ahead, Twins left-hander Joe Ryan (8-3, 2.86 ERA) is set to face Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (2-2, 3.78) in Miami on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty (5-9, 4.80) will take on Nationals right-hander Trevor Williams (3-9, 5.65) in Washington on the same day.
